10:00 - 12:00 PPJ Seminar - Provisioning Tips and Sources
PPJ Seminar - Provisioning Tips and Sources
One of the most time-consuming preparation steps in the count-down to starting the Jump is provisioning. Getting this right will make a huge difference in your cruising experience. Getting it right will pay off in the form of enjoyment and good health. And knowing the right things to do and places to go during the provisioning process can save valuable preparation time.
This will be a panel discussion, moderated by Bill Noonan, covering provisioning ideas, meal preparation, sources of hard-to-find provisions in the PV area, safety in the galley, and record-keeping ideas to control your inventory of provisions. Kyle Quast, from Carnes del Mundo in Bucerias, will offer packaging and storage suggestions for meat. (He will also take meat orders with packaging to your specifications.) El Salvador Rally organizer Jean from Mita Kuluu, former PPJer Susan Levy, and long-time cruiser Karen Danielson will round out the panel.

2:00 - 4:00 PPJ Seminars - Safety at Sea and Common Sense at Sea
Safety at Sea - Boat and Crew Preparation
This first topic will be presented by Capt. Doug Danielson, delivery captain, licensed surveyor, and author. He will draw on his many years of experience as delivery captain and surveyor to share what he has learned about what is important in ensuring a safe and enjoyable passage. He will share specifics on what he has found during surveys that have caused, or could have caused, mishaps and sea.
Doug Danielson has been writing freelance articles for West Coast boating magazines since 1997. He has published two nautical mystery/adventure novels: Shore Loser and Wet Dreams. Doug is a highly proficient captain with extensive experience on both power and sailing vessels. He has piloted the waters of the Pacific Coast from Oregon to Hawaii to the Panama Canal. He has also made passages through the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, and the Intercoastal waters of Florida. He is a knowledgeable marine surveyor, experienced mechanic, meticulous navigator, good cook, and published writer. Doug and his wife Karen are members of VYC and currently reside in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Common Sense at Sea
This second topic will be presented by Dick Markie, Paradise Village Marina Harbormaster and experienced cruiser. Not all that makes cruising safe is complicated and esoteric. Sometimes it all comes down to common sense. Hopefully everyone in the PPJ fleet is well equipped with common sense. So he will share a few reminders of how to effectively use it during the Pacific passage.

7:00 - 9:00 PPJ Seminar - 2010 Passage Diary Aboard Freezing Rain
Jay Ailworth ("Strange Bird"), acclaimed marine photographer, and experienced cruiser and delivery captain, crewed for friends aboard Freezing Rain, a Hallberg-Rassy 46, in the 2010 Puddle Jump. He will share the ups and downs of the passage to the South Pacific in his colorful style. As a special extra treat, he will also share his very best of more than 3,000 photos taken during the trip.
Jay has called Nuevo Vallarta home since 2006 and has been travelling in Mexico since 2004. His love of sailing is the main reason he chose Banderas Bay and its perfect sailing conditions as the place he wanted to live. Jay first became involved in photographing major sailing regattas on the bay during the 2006 Festival Nautico and MEXORC regatta. Since that time he has photographed every major regatta held on Banderas Bay including the 2007 International J24 World Championship, the 2007 Optimist North American Championship and recently the Regata Copa Mexico. His photographs have been featured in and appeared on the covers of several international magazines including Mexico's "Sports Elite Magazine", "Amura Yachts and Lifestyle", "Vallarta Nautica", "Sail Magazine", "Planeta Surf" and "Vallarta Lifestyles". He continues to travel and photograph the places he visits wherever they may be.
