Junior Sailors & Fall Fundraiser

A big "thank you" goes to all participants, donors and volunteers who helped make the Fall 2012 a success. The Jr Sailing Program is self-sustaining, due in large part to these semi-annual fundraisers. We raised $67,854 pesos thanks to you!

The best indicator of the Program success is in the children, and this year's regattas  and Optinam 2012 are proof. Competing against 146 sailors from 18 countries in Optinam, our VYC kids made us proud, as always!  These young sailors are consistently chosen to compete with the best of the best.  Countries included Germany, New Zealand, Netherlands, Singapore, Japan and more.  Read more about the kids and Optinam 2012 here

Juniors Do It Again!

With a determination to beat last year’s accomplishment of winning 7 medals, the VYC Junior delegates  traveled to the Mexico Olimpiada Nacional 2011 held May 11-14 on the beach at Progresso in the state of Yucatan.   The team’s faces were glowing as they returned home with 9 medals for this year, two of which were gold!

A total of 14 youths participated on the Nayarit team.

Eight members of the Vallarta Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program and four VYC volunteers leave today to participate in Olimpiada Nacional 2011 (Mexican National Olympics), May 11-15, 2011. The sailing events will be held in Progreso, Yucatan, and include Optimist, Sailboard and Laser races.  Our sailors will be part of the Nayarit state team, as follows:

Successful Summer for Junior Program

Ken Gill, our Director at Large who oversees the Junior Sailing program reports a very successful summer program for 2011.  We held two great camps over the summer.

First was a beginner’s camp, where six new local children experienced the joys of sailing for the first time.  A good time must have been had by all, because they all plan to continue with our sailing classes.

The second camp was for intermediates.  Six children participated in this camp, with two of them stepping up from the beginner’s camp.  Again, three of these new sailors plan to continue with our sailing classes…. budding sail champions in the making!

One of the highlights of the junior sailing camps was a basic first aid and CPR course.  This was provided to us by the local Proteccion Civil.  These folks are always in hand for our regattas, and they continue to support us in many ways.  Let’s give a big round of “thank yous” from the Vallarta Yacht Club members for all of their assistance!

The summer camps were run by our Coach Eugenie Russell and her new assistant Nora.  Nora has proved to be quite an asset to the club, and a great help to Eugenie, so she has been given the position of Assistant Coach.  Congratulations and “Bravo, Bravo” to Nora for her great work!

Donation of 8 Optimist Boats in 2005 Spawns Growing VYC Junior Sailing Successes

Last Friday afternoon and evening, many of our members saw a large, sparkling clean 18-Wheeler parked in front of the Yacht Club. And alongside of the truck were fifteen of our Junior Sailors who, with the help of their parents, were carefully wrapping padding around their boats. Once properly prepared, three professional movers loaded the boats aboard the truck for transport to Lake Chapala where our young sailors will compete with others from all over Mexico in the 2010 National Junior Olympics. In addition to providing the transport of our boats, the State of Nayarit fully pays for the transportation, food and lodging of the 15 sailors, their coaches and team leaders during the 5 days of the event. From the twelve VYC sailors competing in last year’s Olympics, six of them made the podium taking home 2 Golds, three Silvers and one Bronze medal.
